“Young Hearts” is the debut EP from Monaghan folk-rock 5 piece Lowlight Gathering. The band is made up of Charlie Livingstone, Gregory O’Neill, Shane Murphy, Danny Mahoney and Michael McKenna. The band have been quietly making a name for themselves and have supported The Riptide Movement, The Hothouse Flowers, Ryan Sheridan and Pine The Pilcrow.
The EP kicks off with the brilliantly melodic and aptly titled “Delicate”. The vocals have a very endearing vulnerability to them whilst also being quite strong. A very nice juxtaposition. “Delicate” is a truly remarkable song with endless playback qualities. You could have this song on repeat and never once have enough.
“Young Hearts” has a slight Fleet Foxes sound to it which is always a good thing. The backing vocals and harmonies are incredibly soothing. Another cracking tune.
The third track “Breathe” unfortunately isn’t a cover version of the Prodigy but it is however another beautiful offering from Lowlight Gathering. Again the vocals and backing vocals are perfect, the piano adds a magical touch and the strings
“Walk Away” begins a capella and again highlights the harmonic qualities the group have achieved in their short time together. The harmonies continue throughout the song and are complemented by the simplistic guitar chords.
The EP ends with “Chemicals”. This is the most atmospheric song on the EP with a somewhat haunting backing track and the lyrics which are delivered with a sense of pain and longing in Charlie’s voice.
There is a lyric in the final song that says “Leaves me wanting more of your chemical burns”. Leave out the chemical burns and that is exactly how you will feel about this EP. A brilliant debut EP and a great starting point for the lads from Monaghan. These guys will be making waves across the country and hopefully another EP or album are on the horizon.
